This gold work picture was originally worked for the Embroiderers' Guild Exhibition in 2004 where it was awarded a
Highly Commended in the Contemporary Section of the Margaret Oppen Memorial Prize.
On seeing this work, many embroiderers asked if it was possible to do this work as a kit.
Instructions were then written up accordingly and it has been completed by quite a few embroiderers.
At the request of a few members of the Embroiderers Guild of N.S.W., four workshops will be offered for this
design in 2007 at the Guild's headquarters in Concord, Sydney.
It is possible to buy a kit for this design and it includes the pattern, detailed instructions and the materials and threads for
working the design. The background fabric is black velvet but it is also available in heavy black wool silk.
The inspiration for this design came mostly from icons, gold work samplers and the dancing figures in Romanesque art.
Red and brown velvet ribbons and duchesse white silk are used for the appliques in this work.
Gilt, silver and copper smooth passings and smooth and bright check purls are used in a great variety of laid work techniques
and cutwork techniques including burden stitch. The work is further embellished with petite seed beads and bugle beads,
crystals, paillettes, silver and gilt spangles. It is the combination of gold work techniques and beading techniques
which makes this design so captivating. Silver and gilt super pearl purls are manipulated to create tendrils within the
arch and the larger sizes of gilt pearl purl, unstretched and overstretched, define the arch in the design.
The entire design is finally framed with a metallic braid and gilt medium rococo.
